Three trail systems.
One Matewan base.

Devil Anse, Buffalo Mountain and Rockhouse connect into one massive riding area. Pick Your Trails helps you choose what to ride, what kind of day you want, and how to use Matewan as the place to start.

The advantage

Unload once.
Ride all weekend.

The real Matewan advantage is not just having a trailhead. It is being positioned inside the connected Devil Anse, Buffalo Mountain and Rockhouse riding area while staying in a trail town with lodging, supplies, food and local services.

You can build completely different riding days without turning the trip into a daily trailer-hauling operation.

What kind of day do you want?

These three connected systems give a Matewan trip range. The point is not simply collecting trail names — it is choosing the kind of riding your group wants that day.

01
Start in Matewan

Devil Anse

The natural home system for a Matewan-based trip.

Devil Anse gives you direct access from Matewan and connects into Buffalo Mountain and Rockhouse. It is the system that turns Matewan from a town near the trails into an actual riding base.

Buffalo Mountain

History, technical riding and another personality entirely.

Buffalo Mountain is especially known for its historic setting and single-track presence. Its community connectors include Matewan, Delbarton and Williamson, and it ties back into the larger connected network.

Rockhouse

The mileage day.

Rockhouse is one of the original Hatfield-McCoy systems and has more than 100 miles of trails. Because it connects with Devil Anse and Buffalo Mountain, it becomes part of the larger Matewan riding story rather than a separate trip.

Build a riding day

Every Matewan ride starts on Devil Anse.

That is the key to understanding the connected systems from Matewan. You leave town on Devil Anse first, then decide how far you want to push into the larger network. Buffalo Mountain and Rockhouse are extensions of the day — not separate starting points from Matewan.

01

Stay on Devil Anse

Keep the day centered on Devil Anse, learn the group pace, explore the system and stay relatively close to Matewan.

Best for: Arrival day · mixed groups · first-time visitors
02

Push into Buffalo Mountain

Start on Devil Anse, then use the connected trail network to extend the ride into Buffalo Mountain for a longer day with a different character.

Best for: Full-day exploring · variety · stronger groups
03

Make Rockhouse the Big Day

Leave Matewan through Devil Anse and keep working deeper into the connected network toward Rockhouse. This is the kind of day where fuel, daylight, mileage and current trail routing matter.

Best for: Experienced groups · high mileage · early starts
The simple mental model

Matewan → Devil Anse → go deeper.

That progression is what makes Matewan useful as a base: you can keep the day local or continue through the connected systems without reloading the machines.

These are planning concepts, not fixed routes. Always use the current official Hatfield-McCoy Trails map and posted trail signage before riding.

This is a town with a story far bigger than a trailhead. If you have never walked through Matewan or learned what happened here, leave a little time off the machine.
